The dumping syndrome and its treatment. A review and presentation of cases.

I N 1907 Denecheau [I], a Parisian, published a detailed record of the pattern of postgastrectomy symptoms we have come to know as “dumping.” One year later Jonas [Z] in the German literature again described this constellation of symptoms and provided roentgenograms showing rapid gastric emptying. Similar studies were carried out by Hertz [3] of Guy’s Hospital, London. The coining of the term “dumping” is usually credited to an American physician, Charles Louis Mix 141, in a 1922 account published in the Surgical Clinics of North America. This paper is a narrative in a strongly personal style that has become extinct in modern medical literature. Notable also is the fact the paper was submitted for publication only five days after operative takedown of the gastrojejunostomy responsible for the dumping. Actually, “dumping” was first specifically used in 1920 [;I to describe the set of symptoms now commonly encompassed by the term not by Mix but by the surgeon Edmund E. Andrews [6].
